TCRA Companions - Monnie and Tinnie

Before the 18th century, sailors in the age of sailing ships were prone to scurvy, a disease with symptoms like fatigue, muscle pain, gum and subcutaneous bleeding, etc., which was also called sailor's disease. On May 20, 1747, Dr. James Lind was determined to find a solution to improve the symptoms of sailors. He selected 12 patients with scurvy on the ship and divided them into pairs for different treatments. Two were given cider, two were treated with diluted sulfuric acid, another two took two tablespoons of vinegar three times a day, the two worst cases were treated with seawater, two were recommended for electrotherapy (some say it was a mixture of laxatives or mustard), and the last two were given oranges and lemons. The sailors who took oranges and lemons were able to work normally after six days, followed by the cider.

Dr. James Lind, who successfully treated the sailors with scurvy, published a treatise on scurvy in Edinburgh in 1753, which is also the earliest recorded human clinical trial in history. Monnie and Tinnie, the two companions of TCRA, are derived from the lemons and oranges in this clinical pioneer's story. Let's take a look at their profiles!
